In its quarterly report, Seagate said it expects to make available 20TB hard drives using perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology in the current half year.
Seagate already has 20TB drives aimed at corporate customers, but they use heated magnetic recording (HAMR) technology. These drives are available in limited quantities from some of the company’s partners.

The new drives use a “two-dimensional” form of PMR. Customers are said to be already receiving trial samples. Seagate is also working on 20TB drives that use Tiled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology. They are designed for hyperscale systems with specialized software. Seagate expects its growing line of 20TB HDDs to help meet specific customer needs.
