Seal in South Africa bit a woman and then died of stress

A sea lion, sort of seal of the southern hemisphere, has been trying for days to relax on one of its beaches South Africabut the bathers systematically harassed her: eventually, she bit a woman and died from the stress she suffered while taking her to the vet.

Cape Town City Council today warned holidaymakers to “leave alone” sea lions because “the consequences can be severe” if they are disturbed. Like the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), the council expressed its “outrage” at the “repeated harassment” of the sea lion at Strand Beach, which resulted in the animal attacking a bather and then dying .

In this busy sandy beach, which is about 50 kilometers from Cape Town, the sea lion was “just trying to lie down to rest, a normal and expected behavior” of these animals on the coast of South Africa. Nevertheless the bathers threw sticks and pebbles at her and many of them they were “teasing” her to then take photos of the seal while chasing them, Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews explained, reminding that it is illegal to harass wild animals. He also called on citizens “not to approach” these animals.

On Wednesday afternoon the sea lion bit a woman who had just arrived at the beach and hadn’t noticed that she was sunbathing on the beach. The woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The beach was partially closed this morning in order for the sea lion to be captured and taken to a nearby aquarium to be examined by veterinarians. She would then be released in a less crowded and safer location. But “unfortunately the sea lion died due to the excessive stress it suffered”.
