While much of the search for the missing sub has been focused on the surface of the water, the team now has underwater search capabilities at the site, said US Coast Guard First District Commander Rear Admiral John Mauger.
Canadian Air Craft, USCG and New York Air National Guard aircraft have been flying over an area roughly the size of Connecticut, he told the CNN . This represents the equivalent of 13 thousand square kilometers or more than half the size of Sergipe.
Mauger said he met with the unified command last night, which includes the US Navy, Canadian Coast Guard and Canadian Armed Forces, as well as Ocean Gate Expedition, the company that owns and manages the missing submersible.
Ocean Gate, having more familiarity with the site and knowing where the submersible was operating, is helping to set priorities, he added.
“Our thoughts as we continue with the search are with the crew members and their families at this time,” Mauger said, adding that crews are working hard to “ensure we can locate the submersible.”
“As we continue with this search…we worked overnight with a broad group of partners to bring all the resources to look both aboveground and now expanding underground in the area,” he said.
