A survey carried out exclusively for the CNN by private security companies nationwide showed that the number of service requests in the sector at educational institutions had grown by 300% since the attack on the Thomazia Montoro State School, in the west zone of São Paulo.
On March 27, a student stabbed teacher Elisabete Tenreiro, 71, to death and injured four other people.
Another attack, on April 5, in Blumenau, Santa Catarina, increased panic in the country. A criminal invaded the Cantinho Bom Pastor day care center, killing four children and injuring five others.
The subject is one of the most discussed in groups of parents of students. Many educational institutions began to request budgets to reinforce security systems and it is clear that the presence of security guards at school doors has increased since the attacks.
According to Gocil, a company in the security sector, since the case in São Paulo, 50 budget requests have been made for security services in educational institutions throughout Brazil. Compared to the period between January and May 2022, the increase was more than 300%.
Primebid, another security company, recorded an increase of almost 300% in budget requests until Thursday (13), compared to the previous month. Most of the services requested are installing cameras, turnstiles, remote monitoring and hiring an unarmed security guard or private personal security guard.
The firm also received demands from city halls seeking to know the average price for opening bids. There were at least five requests last week alone in regions of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.
The Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing (ESPM), for example, in order to guarantee the safety of students, professors and employees, adopted new protocols and increased the number of internal and external security guards on the campuses, in addition to creating a direct channel with the civil, metropolitan and military police.
The Tuiuti school, in Maringá, Paraná, adopted training for students and employees to know how to deal with situations in the event of attacks. A video showing a security drill at the institution went viral on social media, with more than 3 million views.
“We have been working with them not only on this contingency aspect, but also providing guidance on the news broadcast and paying special attention to preventing fake news related to violence in schools, in order to reassure them and maintain the normal routine at school” , says the school in a statement.
The initiative to maintain a broad dialogue was taken by the Union of Private Schools in the Northwest of Paraná. The president of the Union of Teaching Establishments of the State of São Paulo (Sieeesp), Benjamin Ribeiro, said, in addition to suggesting that schools take much more care and attention, that the moment leads to a need for guidance to families.
“Pay more attention to your children, being alert to changes in attitudes, monitoring their social networks. If there are changes, it is important that they alert the schools, which have already provided psychological help services to their students for a long time and are increasingly working to raise awareness among their students”, explained Ribeiro.
