Search is relentless for traces of missing people in the Amazon, says Univaja prosecutor

The search for traces of the indigenist Bruno Araújo Pereira and the English journalist Dom Phillips is “relentless” by the teams of the Union of Indigenous Peoples of Vale do Javari, according to the organization’s legal attorney, Elisio Marubo.

In an interview with CNN Radio he stated that the Univaja team had set up camp at the site: “Our team is still there, unlike the authorities who return to the city, to find traces of Bruno and Dom as soon as possible.”

According to the prosecutor, the path taken by both – who have been missing since last Sunday (5th) – is very common, “although there is a context of violence and threats”.

“Bruno, for example, made these short trips, always safely (…), he was monitored practically 24 hours a day when he was in the region”, he added.

Elisio Marubo said Univaja’s security protocol has been in place since Sunday and will continue “until we find Bruno and Dom.”

The disappearance of both is something new for the organization, according to the prosecutor, although he reports that “we have already had people threatened in the region due to the inspection work carried out on indigenous lands.”

The prosecutor stated that the region is densely forested and there is illegal exploitation of protected areas. With prevalence of illegal hunting and fishing.

“There is information that these groups were being used for drug trafficking and money laundering, it is a very big thing, with organizations with different interests and that operate in many countries”, he said.
