Searches after explosion at Enel plant in Italy hold little hope for survivors

Hopes of finding survivors of an accident at an Enel power plant are fading, firefighters said on Wednesday (10).

Rescuers are searching for four missing people in the area of the plant in northern Italy, where water is rising rapidly.

At least three people died on Tuesday (9) after a fire and an explosion in the basement of the hydroelectric plant owned by Enel Green Power, part of the Enel Group, in Bargi, about 80 km from Bologna.

“The hope of rescuers is always to find people alive. The scenario we see does not make us believe much in these hypotheses, but I repeat that we are also used to miracles”, said fire department spokesman Luca Cari.

Cari said that the situation was very difficult, due to the rapid rise of water inside the plant, which was built underground on one of the banks of Lake Suviana.

Rescue teams worked mainly with divers, but did not yet have details about the possible causes and dynamics of the accident, he added.

The plant was undergoing efficiency works, which Enel Green Power entrusted in 2022 to three main companies: Siemens Energy, ABB and Voith, the Enel subsidiary said in a statement.

“From what has been reconstructed, testing of the first generation group had already been completed in recent days and, at the time of the accident, testing of the second group was underway,” said Enel Green Power.

Enel Green Power CEO Salvatore Bernabei immediately went to the scene on Tuesday, the company said, adding that it would fully collaborate with the competent authorities to investigate the facts.

The plant has a capacity of 300 megawatts (MW), part of the Enel Group's 13,000 MW of total hydroelectric capacity in Italy.
