The searches for British actor Julian Sands in a mountain area in California who is missing from January 13 they will continue only from the air, with authorities in the US county of San Bernardino using new technology that can trace electronic devices and credit cards.
The county sheriff’s office said it is “hopeful” that with the technology, authorities will be able to more precisely pinpoint an area to focus efforts on to locate the missing person.
Surveys in high altitude areas were not possible due to poor conditions in the area.
The actor was reported missing on January 13 by a friend. His tracks were lost in the San Gabriel Mountains in southern California where he had gone hiking.
“The search for Julian Sands continues by air only by helicopter,” the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office tweeted, adding that a Special Air Operations Unit from Auburn, which uses Recco technology, is participating in the search.
“Recco technology can detect reflective material, electronic devices and in some cases credit cards,” reports the Athens News Agency.
“We are optimistic our partners can identify an area where we can focus our search efforts, and we thank them for their assistance,” it said.
Yesterday a second hiker who had gone missing in the same area was found alive. According to local media, 75-year-old Jin Chung, a resident of Los Angeles, had been wanted by authorities for about 48 hours. The missing person was found with leg injuries.
In recent weeks, authorities in California have issued statements urging hikers to avoid dangerous mountain areas, saying weather conditions have made rescue operations and the deployment of forces difficult.
