Firefighters continue to work in Petrópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, this Monday (28). The search focuses on removing the rubble of two victims from the locality known as Chácara Flora.
Sidney Andrade lost five family members after the collapse, his parents, grandparents and a brother. The two bodies still buried are those of his mother, Gisele, and his older brother, Wallace. Since day one he has been following the searches in the region.
“When I got home I saw the whole situation. It was all down. It was very sad. I lost everything. Now only me and a brother are left”, said Andrade.
The hardest hit point in this region is close to the Deise Eloi Gomes Early Childhood Education Center. At the time of the rain, many children were still in the nursery. Desperate residents and the children’s parents descended with tools and managed to break part of the wall.
“Is very sad. It was very desperate. Everyone trying to get the kids out. We lost a lot of people that day. We lost Joyce. She was 8 months pregnant, had had the baby shower on Sunday, and on Tuesday, tragedy struck,” said resident Andreza da Silva.
According to the latest balance released by the City Hall, 229 deaths were recorded, of which 136 were women, 93 men and 43 minors. At least 13 support points continue to serve 876 people who lived in risk areas.
