People interested in donating organs can issue free digital authorization

People interested in being organ donors will be able to issue the AEDO (Electronic Organ Donation Authorization) free of charge at notary offices throughout Brazil. The news was announced last Tuesday (2) by the president of the CNJ (National Council of Justice), minister Luís Roberto Barroso, and by the national inspector of Justice, minister Luis Felipe Salomão, during the plenary session, with the launch of the campaign “One Heart: Be Life in Someone’s Life”.

The objective is to further encourage organ donations. According to Minister Barroso, in a note released by the CNJ, in 2023, for every thousand people who died in the country, of which 14.5 could be potential donors, only 2.6 made the donation.

The minister also reinforced the importance of system security. “It is a legally validated instrument and speeds up the donation process, in addition to facilitating consultation with doctors and family members about the patient's wishes. It is necessary to make the population aware that the process is increasingly safe and the effective engagement of everyone can save many lives.”

To carry out the AEDO, the interested party must fill out a form on the site. The notary then schedules a video conference to identify the interested party and collect their expression of will. Finally, the applicant and the notary digitally sign the AEDO, which is available for consultation by those responsible for the National Transplant System.

Currently, there are more than 42 thousand people waiting in line for an organ transplant in Brazil, 500 of them are children, according to the CNJ. Last year alone, three thousand people died due to the lack of organ donation. Through the system, citizens will be able to choose which organ they want to donate – bone marrow, intestine, kidney, lung, liver, cornea, heart or all. Most people on the national transplant queue are waiting to donate a kidney, followed by a liver, heart, lung and pancreas.
