Searches for Valentine’s Day gifts rise 610% in the last week, says Google

“What to give as a gift?” and “What to do?” were the two most asked questions on Google in the last week related to Valentine’s Day. Searches for gifts in general are up sevenfold, by about 610%, and searches for activities related to the day are up 90%.

Overall, date searches have grown by 50% in the last seven days.

Lovers have been looking for creative gift ideas. Baskets, surprise boxes, mugs and kits are the gifts that are among the most searched terms.

Among the items surveyed, tennis is repeated in research related to both genders.

For boyfriends, watch, suit and sweatshirt are also among the main options. For girlfriends, the search is for products such as boots, coats and blazers.

The survey of the search platform also reveals curiosities.

Among the surveys that involve the date, there are questions about the reason for not giving perfume or shoes to your boyfriend, due to superstitions. In the case of perfume, legend has it that love runs out as the bottle runs out. Shoes, on the other hand, are related to the escape from the relationship.

Another survey, also carried out by Google, revealed that about 28% of respondents use the search platform to look for information such as price, description, reviews and ideas for Valentine’s Day.

Among those interested in buying gifts for the day, 40% intend to buy things related to fashion, 32% beauty and perfume, 18% experiences such as travel, flowers, dinner and 17% electronics.

Financial movement

The National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC) estimates that the Brazilian retail trade moves almost R$ 2.5 billion for Valentine’s Day.

If the result is achieved, the sales volume of the trade will be 2.6% lower this year, when compared to the commemorative date in 2021. The main reason: the inflationary pressure that reduced the purchasing power of Brazilians, according to the study.

Valentine’s Day is the sixth most important commemorative date in retail, in terms of financial transactions.

In bars and restaurants, expectations are also positive for the date, which is the best in terms of revenue for establishments in the sector.

This year, these establishments are expected to earn, on average, 30% more than in 2021 and to grow 20% compared to the pre-pandemic period, according to monitoring carried out by the Brazilian Association of Bars and Restaurants (Abrasel).
