In an interview with CNN, this Saturday (9), economist Fernando Iglesias commented on Brazilian beef exports. According to him, the “search for new markets is important” for Brazil.
“The country presented an excellent performance in beef exports to the United States. This has been going on since last year, Brazil had already been scaling meat sales destined for the North American market,” he said.
According to data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the volume of Brazilian meat exported to the United States exceeded that of major American trading partners in the first two months of 2022.
The country registered more than 70 tonnes of the protein being shipped to the US in January and February — a 446% increase over the same period in 2021 — against about 66,000 tonnes from Canada, 59,000 tonnes from Mexico, 29,000 tonnes from New Zealand and 29,000 tonnes from Australia.
Iglesias explains that this increase occurs because the livestock market in North America is in an off-season period.
“Meat production in Mexico and Canada, important US trading partners, is down. In the same way that the situation in the US market also points to a decrease in the herd”. In this way, Brazil benefits as a supplier.
Finally, the economist mentions that the trend is for the country to “continue with the good pace of exports and revenue growth throughout the year”, helping the Brazilian trade balance.
