Second earthquake of the year is recorded in Agreste de Pernambuco

An earthquake was recorded in the municipality of Caruaru, in Agreste de Pernambuco, this Thursday (16). The seismic event occurred at 5:03 am, Brasília time, with a magnitude calculated at 1.5 on the Richter scale (mR), according to monitoring by the Seismology Laboratory of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (LabSis/UFRN).

This is the second earthquake recorded in the Agreste region of the state this year.

At the time of publication of this report, according to UFRN, there are no reports of residents who felt the tremor, which suggests that the impact on the site was of low intensity.

The last tremor recorded in the state of Pernambuco occurred just four days earlier, on January 12, in the municipality of Belo Jardim, also in Agreste, with an earthquake of magnitude 1.8. Although these tremors are common in some regions of the Northeast, they generally do not cause major damage.

The Caruaru area is known for recording small seismic events, but which do not cause significant damage. The tremor occurs because Caruaru is located on the Pernambuco-Leste shear zone, a geological fault that crosses the state, causing frequent seismological movements. Despite this, Brazil, as it is in an intraplate geographic zone, does not usually record earthquakes of great magnitude.

Authorities and the scientific community continue to monitor the area, emphasizing that, although tremors are recurrent, events of this magnitude rarely cause inconvenience to residents of the region.
