Secret documents sent by NATO to Portugal stolen and put up for sale on the Dark Web

Hundreds of classified documents he had sent the NATO in Portugal were found to be sold at Dark Web following a cyber attack against the country’s armed forces general staff and the military’s Intelligence Service.

“It is about a cyber attackwhich lasted for a long time and went unnoticed, by bots programmed to detect these types of documents,” said one of the anonymous imgs cited by the Diario de Noticias newspaper.

Always according to Diario de Noticiasthe incident was noticed by the American Intelligence services, who informed the Portuguese authorities about this in August through the American embassy in Lisbon.

Investigation of its cyber security services Portugal identified as targets of the attack the general staff of the armed forces, the intelligence service of the army and an agency of the Ministry of Defense.

“The government is in a position to ensure that the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces work every day so that Portugal’s credibility as a founding member of the Atlantic Union remains intact,” Prime Minister Antonio Costa said, as reported by the Athens News Agency.

“Each time there is a suspected breach (…) the situation is analyzed in depth” and measures are taken “to strengthen cyber security”, the Portuguese government added, without however confirming or denying the newspaper’s information.

According to Diario de Noticias, the documents in question had been exchanged between various Portuguese agencies over unsecured lines of communication.
