Secret meeting of the President of Israel with the King of Jordan

The President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, met secretly with him King Abdullah II of Jordan in Amman, he revealed on Saturday, as part of the warming of relations between the two countries.

“Last week, I had a long discussion with the King of Jordan, I was in his palace for a whole night. “It was a great meeting,” the Israeli president said in an interview, excerpts of which were broadcast on Israeli television at night.

The entire interview will be broadcast on Sunday, the eve of the Jewish New Year.

“Jordan is a very important country. “I have immense respect for King Abdullah, a great leader and a very important regional player,” the Israeli president said in a statement.

The text referred to a “warm meeting” at the invitation of the King of Jordan, during which the two leaders discussed “strategic issues, at bilateral and regional level”.

“Among the issues we discussed are issues that are at the heart of relations between our two countries, mainly an agreement on the import of agricultural products (from Jordan) during the semitach year, energy issues, sustainable development and solutions to the climate crisis. “which we can promote together,” the statement said.

Jordan and Egypt are the only Arab countries bordering Israel that have signed a peace agreement with it.

Bilateral relations between the two countries deteriorated during Netanyahu’s rule. Critics have accused the former prime minister of neglecting the Hashemite Kingdom in favor of normalizing Israel’s relations with other Arab countries – the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco.

The new Israeli Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett, traveled to Amman to meet with King Abdullah shortly after taking office.

The two countries reached an agreement in early July to sell 50 million cubic meters of water a year from Israel to Jordan, in addition to the more than 55 million cubic meters given free of charge annually to Jordan.

Under the agreement, Jordan was allowed to increase its exports to the West Bank, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967.
