One 13th century secret passage that connects the Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome, Vatican It was reopened to the public after six years without receiving visitors. After restoration works, the iconic 800 -meter corridor will receive day and night guided tours.
Built as a safe passage to the popes, being used for defense purposes and as an escape route, the Passetto di Borgo Tower Del Mascherino, in Piazza Della Città Leonina, to Bastione San Marco, at Castel Sant’Angelo.
The visit is alternated on two levels: a discovered superior, which guarantees panoramic views around Rome and the Vatican, and a covered lower lower that served as the real secret passage of the popes.
The entrance begins at Piazza Della Città Leonina and ends in the Bastion of the Castle, where visitors have an exhibition with works and objects that narrate historical events linked to Passetto and Castel Sant’Angelo.
Secret passage

Raised originally in the 2nd century as a mausoleum for Emperor Adriano, Castel Sant’Angelo was converted into a military fortress, as it has a strategic location on the banks of the Tiber River.
Over time, fortification has undergone several uses, from papal residence, prison and to a luxurious palace.
In 1277, under the look of Pope Nicholas III, the connection with the Vatican was built with the objective of ensuring a safe passage to the popes between the two addresses.
Over time, some interventions have changed the appearance of the place, such as the addition of a covered passage, similar to the corridor that can be found today.
Guided tours

Guided tours are reported to narrate the whole history of the place, made alongside archaeologists and art historians.
There are three modalities for sale: a day -guided daytime visit only on Passetto di Borgo; a daytime visit that comprises Passetto and also Castel Sant’Angelo; and a special night visit at Passetto and the fortress closed to the group, without the presence of other visitors.

According to Italy’s general direction of museums, a 2.5 million euros financing, about $ 15 million, will allow future improvements in secret connection and Castel Sant’Angelo, with new interventions planned for the next three years.
Today, the fortress houses a museum that tells the history of the place, in which visitors can check out the old mausoleum rooms, prison cells, papal apartments and terraces.
