Security agency says Norway suffered cyberattacks from pro-Russian group

Several public and private institutions in Norway have been subjected to a so-called distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) cyberattack in the last 24 hours, Norwegian security authority NSM said on Wednesday.

“A pro-Russian criminal group appears to be behind the attacks,” the NSM said.

DDoS is an attempt to make a system’s resources unavailable. It’s not like an invasion of the system, but an overload invalidation.

Russia warns Norway for restricting supplies to settlements on Svalbard

Also on Wednesday, Russia said that restrictions imposed by Norway were blocking the transport of goods to Russian-populated settlements in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard and urged Oslo to resolve the matter as soon as possible or face consequences.

The ministry said it had summoned Norway’s chargé d’affaires to argue against the restrictions, which it said were blocking the transport of food and medical equipment.

Svalbard is part of Norway, although Russia has the right to exploit the archipelago’s natural resources under a treaty signed in 1920 and maintains a diplomatic presence in the settlement of Barentsburg, largely populated by Russians and Ukrainians.
