A joint operation triggered on the morning of Monday (12) by the Federal Police, Civil Police and the Federal Prosecutor’s Office resulted in the discovery of a clandestine cigarette factory in Vicar General, in the north of Rio de Janeiro. The action is part of a coordinated investigation to dismantle a manufacturing and distribution scheme of counterfeit cigarettes in the state.
During the operation, the agents located the shed in full operation, with an industrial structure assembled for the production of cigarettes of Paraguayan origin. In the place, 22 Paraguayan nationality workers were found, all submitted to degrading conditions, characterizing a situation analogous to slavery.
Five men who worked as production line managers and supervisors were arrested in the act. According to investigations, the factory supplied points of sale in various regions of the state, and operated with high production capacity.
Everyone involved were taken to the Federal Police Regional Superintendence in Rio de Janeiro, where legal proceedings were performed, including the arrest records. The materials, inputs and equipment seized were sent to the deposit of the IRS, where they will go through expertise.
The action was coordinated by the Integrated Force to Combat Organized Crime (FICCO/RJ) and the MPF’s Special Crime Combat (Gaeco) Special Action Group (Gaeco). Authorities are still investigating possible branches of the criminal organization, as well as the enticement of foreign workers.
