See 5 interesting facts about “Mean Girls”, which turns 20 in 2024

This Tuesday (30), the film “Mean Girls” turns 20 years old. With Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams in the cast, the film is considered a classic of the 2000s and continues to be successful due to its lines, scenes and striking characteristics.

The plot follows the arrival of new student Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) who, to help revenge a new friend, joins the school's preppy group, led by Regina George (Rachel McAdams). While planning to destroy the girls by pretending to be close to them, the young girl tries to maintain her essence while resisting high school.

After its release, the film also inspired other creations: a 2011 sequel and an adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn is based on the 2004 film.

In commemoration of the date, CNN listed five interesting facts about the film. Check it out below:

“Mean Girls Day”

A line from the film – which mentions October 3rd – has become emblematic for fans of “Mean Girls”, because the day marks exactly the conversation between Cady, Lindsay Lohan’s character, and her crush, Aaron Samuels, played by actor Jonathan Bennett.

In the scene, he asks her what day it was. “On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was”, narrates the protagonist when commenting on the iconic dialogue that, to this day, is remembered by fans. Because of this, the internet meets annually to not let the date go unnoticed.

“On Wednesdays we wear pink”

Another symbol of the film that is present among fans is the choice of a pink piece of clothing to compose the look when it is Wednesday. This is because in one of the film's scenes, Cady is invited to have lunch with the popular girls, however, she is soon told that she must wear a piece in this color, to sit at the table with them whenever it is Wednesday.

Regina George wig

Believe it or not, Rachel McAdams wore a blonde wig to play the iconic role of Regina George. In an interview with the Seventeen portal, actor Rajiv Surendra, who was in the film, said that the device was used because the actress did not want to bleach all of her hair.

I remember regularly going to the hair and makeup trailer and seeing the wig being washed. They would actually wash it and put a shower cap on it, which they would attach the hairdryer to to dry the wig. It was like a $10,000 wig,” he said.

Disputed role for Karen

In the film, Amanda Seyfried won the role of Karen Smith, one of the popular girls at school. However, other major actresses auditioned for the character. This is the case of Ashley Tisdale, known for giving life to Sharpay Evans in “High School Musical” and Blake Lively, Serena from “Gossip Girl”.

The revelation was made by Tisdale during an interview with the program “Watch What Happens Live!” by Andy Cohen.

“Thank U, Next”

As mentioned, the film is still a success and inspires many fans to this day. It was through its iconic scenes and visuals that Ariana Grande was inspired by “Mean Girls” to compose the music video for the song “thank u, next”.

Released in 2019, the singer's clip features striking references from the film, such as the “book of success”, the pink looks and the scene in which the popular girls dance to the song “Jingle Bell Rock”.
