See before and after a 200 -year tree that fell with heavy rain in SP

The heavy rain that hit the city of Sao Paulo last Wednesday (12) overthrew a historical symbol of the state capital: The third oldest tree in the city, a 30 meter high and approximately 200 years located in Largo do Arouche, in the city center.

According to the informative plaque installed on site by the São Paulo City Hall, the tree, known as “Chichá do Largo do Arouche”, was a living witness in the history of the city. She was born in the 19th century and was part of the former property of General Toledo de Arouche, which named it.

According to the Fire Department, the case was one of 217 calls for tree falls registered in the capital and Greater São Paulo during the storm.

The strength of the wind and the intensity of the rain contributed to the fall of several trees in the city.

Also known as Ararichá, Samaúma-Branca, Boywood or Nail-D’Anta, the tree belongs to the genus Sterculia Chicha or Curious, from the Malvaceae family, and originates from the Atlantic Forest.

Matt Franco, resident of the region, shared on social networks that he was very sad with the fall of the tree. He saw her as a symbol of the city’s history that accompanied several important moments. For him, the fall of the tree represents a warning about climate change.

“She had been with me from childhood, all my phases, but more than that… accompanied the history of the city of SP and the country, this tree accompanied the invention of the car, the change of gas lighting from gas to electricity, resisted two world wars, Spanish flu, coronavirus…”, commented Matt Franco.

According to the São Paulo City Hall note, the Chichá tree was monitored over the years and received conservation measures, as well as periodic evaluations to monitor its health status. In addition, the agency adds that in early January, a protection was placed around the tree.

The Subprefecture Sé has a mapping of the 52,000 trees that exist in the 25 neighborhoods and eight districts it manages. They are all inspected every two years and have a report on their technical state.

Finally, the city adds that the teams are acting for the removal of fallen trees.

According to the Paulistano Almanac of Sesc São Paulo, Figueira das Teás is the oldest tree of São Paulo, about 240 years old. Situated on a private property in Sacomã, the tree was already witness to history in 1861, when the Portuguese traveler Emilio Zaluar registered it.
