After a period of about 3 months of works and preparations, the City Hall of Balneário Camboriú, in Santa Catarina, will start the summer season in the new sands of Praia Central, the city’s postcard, on Saturday (4).
With the buildings and constructions very close to the beach, as well as the fact that the sea level has risen in recent years, the incidence of the sun in the place had been reduced – which made the sand part of the beach even smaller .
The width of the beach’s sand strip was increased from 25 to 70 meters, on average, in a long process of collecting the sand at a point 15 kilometers from the coast and transferring it back to the shore.
According to the City Hall, the structural protection work of the edge has been debated since the 1990s. Filling began on August 22, and the last sand discharge was carried out on October 31. 2.2 million cubic meters of sand were transferred.
All equipment used, however, was completely removed on November 30th.
“This is the conclusion of a historic and successful work in all senses, which is serving as an incentive and a beacon to coastal protection works throughout Brazil”, declared the city’s mayor, Fabrício Oliveira (Podemos), in an announcement made by Town hall.
“It was a quick and very well executed project that fulfilled the dream cherished by the population of Balneário Camboriú for decades”, he added.
During the work, there was an expected appearance of sharks in Praia Central. The disturbance caused by the drainage of the sand caused an accumulation of marine sediments, which attracted fish and, in turn, sharks, experts explained at the time to CNN.
The Central Beach of Balneário Camboriú is about 5.8 kilometers long and, with its wider sand strip, will host events to celebrate the beginning of the summer season in the city. The structure is being assembled at the height of Praça Almirante Tamandaré.
Musical concerts, circus performances and educational tents are planned on the environmental impact of the beach restoration project, as well as explanations about the care of the oceans and the correct disposal of garbage on site.
