See essential care to prevent skin dryness in winter

Skin dryness is one of the main effects caused by the drop in air humidity and temperatures with the arrival of winter.

The habit of taking warmer baths favors the removal of natural oiliness from the skin, which also contributes to the feeling of dry and whitish-looking skin. Care such as reinforcing body hydration, attention to shower temperature and food can contribute to reducing the impacts of the coldest season of the year.

“Common mistakes are hot baths that dry out the skin more and using lotions or oils at a time when the skin may need more hydration. Prefer the use of creams during this period”, says dermatologist Beatrice Abdalla, from Hospital Sírio-Libanês.

“The biggest winter care myth is that we don’t need to use sunscreen. We continue to be exposed to the sun in winter and even on cloudy days, ultraviolet radiation passes through the clouds, so it is essential to use sunscreen, even in winter”, says Beatrice.

Some actions taken during the day can be essential to keep the skin healthy during the cold period, as explained by Juliana Rampani, specialist in advanced aesthetics and integrative health.

“Those patients who already have a pre-disposition for skin flares should have intensified care in winter. Among the practices indicated for them, although it is simple, is the reduction of time in the hot bath, as the high temperature decreases the hydration of the largest organ in the body”, he says.

Reinforcement in hydration

In winter, there is a decrease in air humidity associated with lower temperatures, which favors skin dryness.

In this context, very hot baths can be harmful. “Hot water and soaps remove natural fat from the surface of the skin, which is important for retaining water. So, if we lose this layer, there is a loss of water through the skin, which becomes dry, opaque, itchy”, explains dermatologist Renata Janones, from the Hospital de Clínicas of the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU).

The main precaution to avoid dryness is hydration.

“So, hydrate this skin very well with creams, avoid using foams or lotions during this period, which sometimes won’t hydrate the skin properly. Mainly, the use of creams would be ideal”, says Beatrice. “You should dry with a towel with a soft touch, avoid rubbing your skin too much, avoid using loofahs”, she adds.
