“Counterweight”, by Djuna (Ed. Suma)

South Korea’s strong corporate culture and space tourism inspire a cyberpunk science fiction film. In the story, a large company called LK works on building an elevator to Earth’s orbit. On Earth, the elevator starts from the fictional island of Patusan, which ends up becoming a tourist attraction. In space, the elevator is supported by space junk (the counterweight of the title).

Djuna is the pseudonym of a South Korean author. The writer said, in an interview with Wired magazine, that the name is a reference to the American author Djuna Barnes. In the same interview, the Korean says that the pseudonym won the favor of editors, who adopted it without discussing it with the author. Today, he says he likes to use Djuna because it resembles the name of a K-pop idol (a South Korean pop music genre that has taken over the world).

The publisher’s forecast is that “Contrapeso” will be released in Brazil in September.

“A Delicate Enchantment” by Allison Saft
