Singer Gal Costa, elected as the seventh greatest voice of Brazilian music by Rolling Stone magazine in 2012, died this Wednesday (9).
Gal was one of the confirmed attractions of the Primavera Sound music festival, but canceled the performance due to health issues. The singer was recovering from a procedure to remove a lump in her nasal cavity, according to a statement from the tour director.
Artists such as Caetano Veloso, Tom Zé, Gilberto Gil, Nara Leão and Maria Bethânia worked with the artist, who represented Brazilian tropicalism during the country’s Military Dictatorship.
On her touring schedule, Gal was highly anticipated and would play the iconic album Fa-Tal, released in 1971.

Gal Costa is considered one of the main female vocal references of her generation and influence for later singers. With an irreverent and defiant posture, her trajectory is marked by reinventions, ruptures and the particular junction of the rock scream with popular singing.
