Former boxer José Adilson Maguila died at the age of 66, this Thursday (24). The information was confirmed by the Maguila Institute.

The boxer’s cause of death has not yet been confirmed by the institute or family.

Maguila fought 85 times in his career, with 77 victories, and among his titles is a Boxing World Championship, by the World Boxing Federation, considered at the time as second line, in 1995.

He played in the heavyweight division for 17 years as a professional.

In his career, Maguila fought against big names in international boxing. Among them, Evander Holyfield, American star.

Career

One of the biggest names in national boxing, José Adilson dos Santos Rodrigues, known as Maguila, died this Thursday (24), aged 66.

For more than 5 years, the former boxer was undergoing treatment for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), known as “dementia pugilistica”, an incurable neurodegenerative disease that is directly related to the blows suffered throughout his career.

Maguila fought professionally between 1993 and 2000, and throughout these two decades dedicated to the sport, there were 85 official fights, with impressive numbers: 77 victories, 61 of which were by knockout, only 7 defeats and one technical draw.

Among all the clashes faced by the Brazilian boxer, two were memorable and entered the history of the sport, the first against world champion Evander Holyfield in 1989, and a year later when he entered the ring with George Foreman, for the preliminary fight between Mike Tayson and Henry Tillman.

The fight with Holyfield ended in the second round, with a knockout victory for the American and five-time heavyweight champion. At the time Maguila was on a streak of 18 wins.

Against George Foreman, the native of Aracaju, who was among the most important heavyweights, had 36 victories and was ranked 10th in the World Boxing Association rankings. Foreman emerged victorious in the second round when he knocked out Maguila.

Among his titles, Maguila has the Boxing World Championship, in 1995, by the World Boxing Federation.
