A residential building with 133 apartments in Praia Grande, on the coast of São Paulo, was evacuated in the early afternoon of this Tuesday (13) after Civil Defense technicians identified a structural collapse in three columns of the building. The problem was found underground.
As an emergency action, the teams responsible for the work placed numerous iron stakes in the building's garage, which go from floor to ceiling, and help support the building.
In an interview with CNN Lieutenant Colonel Maxwell de Souza, spokesman for the Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo, said that the building “is not at risk of collapsing”.
“Over the last few hours, there have been no new shocks. No new damage to another structure, to another column. So, it is a safe situation”, explained the spokesperson.
According to the spokesperson, residents reported hearing “noises like explosions”.
A shear event occurred in the building, which caused the concrete surrounding the fittings in the columns to explode. “Concrete flies everywhere and the beams are exposed.”
According to the lieutenant colonel, only a report “will be able to point out what actually caused this shock in these columns”.
