Russian President Vladimir Putin has given his approval in principle to the Russian Foreign Ministry’s response to the West regarding the security guarantees requested by Moscow, according to the RIA news agency, citing the Kremlin.
According to Reuters, Russian diplomats are now finalizing the text of the answers to the West.
According to TASS, the spokesman for the Russian president, Dmitry Peshkov, said that Putin would approve “at the appropriate time Russia’s response” to the US and NATO.
Asked when Putin’s approval of this response should be expected, D. Peshkov replied: “In time.”
Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov suggested to Vladimir Putin Moscow should continue on the diplomatic route in order to extract security guarantees from the West, at a time when tensions over developments in Ukraine are escalating.
Lavrov told Putin that the United States had made concrete proposals to reduce the military threat, but noted that responses from the European Union and NATO were unsatisfactory.
In a televised debate, Putin appeared to ask Lavrov if an agreement could be reached to address Russia’s security concerns or if he was simply engaging in torturous negotiations.
Lavrov responded: “We have repeatedly warned that we will not allow indefinite negotiations on issues that need to be resolved today.” But as foreign minister, he said, “I must say that there is always a chance that problems will be solved.”
He added: “It seems to me that the opportunities for dialogue have not been exhausted […] At this stage, I would suggest we continue [σ.σ.: διπλωματικά] and expand the negotiations. ”
Lavrov’s comments appeared to signal a reduced chance of an imminent Russian invasion, following repeated warnings from the United States that Russia could attack Ukraine at any time.
Lavrov said he had received “unsatisfactory” responses to a letter he sent to dozens of members of the European Union and NATO on the issue of “indivisible security”.
“None of my fellow ministers responded to my immediate message,” he said. “Therefore, we will continue to seek a specific response from each country.”
