See Putin: We do not seek to re-establish the Russian Empire

Russian President Vladimir Putin today rejected accusations that his moves were aimed at rebuilding the Russian Empire.

In particular, as reported by the Tass agency, in talks he had with his counterpart from Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, Bl. Putin told him that “you know that yesterday Russia decided to recognize the sovereignty of the two People’s Republics of Donbass. I want to tell you that we anticipated the speculation that Russia intends to restore the Empire within its borders”, which as he stressed, “it is completely untrue.”

Ο Βλ. Putin also said that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation recognized the new geopolitical realities and is working to strengthen cooperation with all independent states.

The Russian president also added that even in situations of intense escalation, such as the Nagorno-Karabakh case, Moscow has always acted very carefully and constantly strives to reach mutually acceptable solutions.

As for Ukraine, however, it said it was a “different situation” because “its territory is being used by third countries to pose a threat to Russia.”
