See risks and why it is not recommended to apply perfume in the intimate region

From time to time, questions about the use of perfumes in the intimate region pops up on social networks. Recently, the matter surfaced when policeman Aline Patriarch, 32, confined to BBB 25, applied the cosmetic to the area while preparing to go to the pool.

Although it is often seen, practice is not recommended by experts in the face of high skin sensitivity and vulvar and vaginal mucosa.

“With use, the intimate region may suffer from irritation and dryness. In addition, a change in the vaginal microbiome may occur, which acts on reproductive health, fertility, quality of life and defense against potential pathogens, ”says gynecologist and obstetrician Nelio Veiga Junior, master and doctor in Tocogynecology.

“That is, vaginal perfumes can cause dryness, allergic reactions, inflammation, obstruct pores and increase the risk of infection,” concludes the expert.

The professional also explains the importance of avoiding deodorants and perfumes that are not specific to sensitive regions, in order to preserve the pH of the region. “In fact, any product that has the chemical ability to change the mucosa or pH of the vagina can cause more damage than benefits,” he says.

“In particular, lubricants, spray deodorants and post-vaginals can increase women’s susceptibility to urinary tract infections, bacterial vaginosis and sexually transmitted infections,” the doctor warns.

“It is also important to avoid talc because, in addition to causing irritation and obstruction of the pores, some studies show that there may be a possible association with increased risk of ovarian cancer, when applied in the genital region,” he adds.

Absence of odor and vaginal discharge

According to Veiga, many women start to use products in search of avoiding odors and vaginal discharge. However, he points out that most vaginal secretions represents good health. “That is, they are physiological and secretion acts as a protection against irritation and infections.”

What can lead to vaginal odor and discomfort is lack of hygiene, since even in the absence of vaginal infection, the glands continue to produce sweat and fat and may promote bacteria proliferation.

“So, to avoid bad odor, just adopt basic hygiene care. When urinating, always clean from front to back. And when evacuating, prefer to wash or use neutral moistened wipes. In addition, also use specific products for intimate hygiene and keep the region’s hair well trimmed, ”he concludes.
