See some challenges that Pope Leo XIV may face during papacy

Now that Robert Prevost is Pope Leo XIV, he assumes many responsibilities and future challenges as the new leader of the Catholic Church.

First, the world is also observing to see if he will follow Pope Francis’ way.

Francis’ rejection to opulence and his smoother tone on social issues have been praised by some Western leaders, but there is still a part of the church that advocates a stricter stance on issues such as sex, gender, marriage and immigration.

He must also choose carefully when intervening on the world scenario. Francisco has become increasingly political in the last years of his papacy, defending the rights of immigrants, asking for a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas, and suggesting-to the wrath of Kiev-that Ukraine agitated “the white flag” and concessions to end the Russian war in the country.

These ongoing conflicts and the rise of populism and authoritarianism around the world create a complex context in which the new Pope – himself an important figure in global diplomacy – will act.

And the way Leo XIV will deal with the clerical sexual abuse scandals that have long plagued the church can also define its papacy. Although Francis has been defensively positioned himself about his history in the subject and taken some important measures to deal with systemic issues involving abuse, the previous Pope was accused by groups of survivors of not holding bishops and cardinals accused of covering abuse.
