The federal government published the rules for enlisting women in the Armed Forces on Wednesday morning (28). The decree published in the Official Gazette establishes the procedures necessary for recruitment, incorporation and provision of initial military service. Enlistment will be permitted from January 2025.
The expectation is that the Minister of Defense, José Mucio Monteiro, will announce voluntary female military enlistment this Wednesday, during an event celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Ministry of Defense (MD).
The process will be very similar to compulsory military service, imposed on all men who reach the age of 18. The steps include submission through enlistment, a selection process with different stages, and finally, the incorporation of the selected people.
How will it work?
The process will be exclusively for women who decide to volunteer. The enlistment period will take place between January and June of the year in which the candidate turns 18.
The selection of locations for enlistment will be made annually through the general call-up plan, carried out by the Armed Forces to the Minister of State for Defense. Currently, the Military Service Board in the city of São Paulo, for example, is linked to services of the city’s sub-prefectures. It is possible to enlist online.
About the selection
According to the decree, the selection will meet specific criteria defined by the Armed Forces and will observe the corresponding general call-up plan, approved by the Minister of State for Defense. Any candidate who does not attend the selection, in any of its stages, will be considered to have withdrawn permanently.
At this stage, candidates undergo medical and physical examinations, general knowledge and psychological tests, and an interview to certify that the enlisted woman has no limitations on the provision of initial military service. Candidates may be exempted or considered excess contingent.
Some barracks assess specific attributes to ensure that citizens are able to perform all tasks required in training.
About incorporation
Basic training will begin with the official act of incorporation. Selected women may opt out of initial female military service up until the official act of incorporation.
From the official act of incorporation, compliance becomes mandatory, with the candidate being subject to the rights, duties and penalties, in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 4,375, of August 17, 1964, and Decree No. 57,654, of January 20, 1966.
Completion of the initial course will be considered as a sufficient level of education for the exercise of basic general functions. Generally, the minimum period is one year, but the decree does not specify this period. Upon completion, the candidate will receive the Reservist Certificate.
Difference in relation to men
Unlike mandatory service, female voluntary service does not guarantee stability in military service. Female volunteers will become part of the unpaid reserve of the Armed Forces after being released from active service.
Currently, men who are working and are called up for military service are also guaranteed to return to their previous activities. For voluntary service, there is no provision for this guarantee.
