See the rules of the debate between JD Vance and Tim Walz, vice candidates in the USA

As vice presidential candidates Ohio Senator JD Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz prepare to take the debate stage on Tuesday, CBS News announced the official rules, including a 90-minute debate without opening speeches or studio audience.

The network notes that it “reserves the right to mute candidates’ microphones,” however, unlike the presidential debates, the microphones will be open, according to a statement from CBS News.

Walz will appear on the right side of the screen for viewers and Vance will appear on the left side. As the party’s incumbent candidate, Walz will be introduced on stage first.

The candidate who is asked a question will have two minutes to respond and the other candidate will have two minutes to respond. Candidates will have one minute for additional rebuttals. An additional minute to continue a topic may be granted at the discretion of the moderator.

Candidates are not allowed to interact with employees during breaks. They are given a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water, but no props or pre-written notes are allowed. There will be two commercial breaks of four minutes each.

The debate begins at 10pm Brasília time in New York City and is moderated by Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan.

Here is a list of the debate rules that CBS News released:

  • The candidates will stand behind podiums during the debate, Walz on stage left/screen right and Vance on stage right/screen left.
  • Candidates will have two minutes for closing statements. A virtual draw was held on September 26th. Senator Vance won and chose to come second with his closing statement.
  • Candidates will be presented by the moderators in order of the party in office.
  • No props or pre-written notes will be permitted on stage.
  • No topics or questions will be shared in advance with campaigns or candidates.
  • Campaign staff cannot interact with candidates during breaks.
Candidates will receive a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water.
  • The lights will indicate the remaining time, with a numerical countdown: green up to 15 seconds; static yellow for up to five seconds; flashing red at five seconds; static red at zero.
  • CBS News reserves the right to turn off candidates’ microphones.
  • Moderators will attempt to enforce time agreements.
  • For each question, the candidate will have two minutes to answer and the other candidate will have two minutes to respond. Then, each candidate has one minute for further rebuttals. At the discretion of the moderators, candidates may have an additional minute each to continue the discussion.
