The phases of Venus, the Aurora Australis and the International Space Station transiting the Sun were featured as category winners in the Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition (Astronomy Photographer of the Year, in Portuguese).
Ryan Imperio has been named the overall winner of the 2023 Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition, organised by the Royal Observatory Greenwich, for his stunning photograph capturing the progression of the Baily’s beads during the 2023 annular eclipse.
This rare formation occurs when sunlight passes through valleys and craters on the Moon’s surface, interrupting the characteristic ring of the eclipse. Capturing these “pearls” requires precise timing and only occurs at the beginning or end of an eclipse.
In addition to Imperio, other notable images were also recognized in different categories of the competition. Among them, the phases of Venus, the Aurora Australis and the International Space Station transiting the Sun stand out.
Ryan, surprised by his win, expressed his gratitude, celebrating: “The images selected each year are absolutely stunning, and I am both thrilled and honored to have my photo among them.”
Ed Bloomer, an astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich and a member of the competition’s judging panel, highlighted the abundance of “impressive work” in this year’s Astronomy Photographer of the Year. He highlighted the exceptional quality of the images entered.
Victoria Lane, senior curator at the Royal Museums Greenwich, said the variety and skill demonstrated in the photos, some seemingly impossible to capture, was astonishing.
This year’s competition received more than 3,500 entries from 58 countries. The winning photos will be showcased in an exhibition opening at the National Maritime Museum in London on Friday (13), celebrating the talent of photographers around the world.
