The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) launched the Human Development Report 2025 . This report, as is tradition, presents the Human Development Index (HDI) of countries.

The document was entitled “The Matter of Choice: People and Possibilities in the Age of Ai” (a question of choice: people and possibilities in the Age of AI).

The report presents a view of the importance of the rise of artificial intelligence as a decisive point for the progress of humanity, demanding decisions on the development and integration of this technology into society to ensure that its benefits extend to all and promote human flowering.

The HDI is a compound index that measures the progress of a country in three basic dimensions of human development: A long and healthy life , knowledge and one standard of living .

These dimensions are measured by life expectancy at birth, expected years of education, average school years and per capita gross national income.

The 2025 report classifies countries and territories based on the HDI value reached in 2023 . Countries are classified in decreasing order by the value of the HDI, and those with the same HDI value with three decimal places are listed as tied.

Classifications are based on fixed cutting points, dividing countries into human development groups Very tall, high, medium and low .

Top 10 in the HDI ranking

The report details the human development index and its components for 2023, as well as presenting the 2022 ranking for comparison.

In 2023, Iceland led the ranking with a HDI of 0.972. Norway and Switzerland were second, both with a HDI of 0.970. Denmark ranks 4th with 0.962, while Germany and Sweden share 5th place, both with a HDI of 0.959.

Brazil rises 5 positions in the ranking

Brazil has advanced five positions and now occupies the 84th place between the 193 countries and territories in the Ranking of the Human Development Index (HDI), prepared by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), as released on Tuesday (6).

In the previous document, which analyzed the 2022 data, the Brazilian HDI was 0.778 . In 2023, the Brazilian index was in 0.786 .
