One partial eclipse occurred during a Supermoon on Tuesday night (17) yielding some beautiful records of the combination of two astronomical phenomena.

To the Supermoons are the largest and brightest lunar events of the year. They occur when the satellite is at its closest point to Earth (perigee), since the Moon’s orbit around the Earth is not a perfect circle, but an elliptical path.
Already the partial lunar eclipse occurs when only a part of the satellite is covered by the Earth’s shadow.
Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, which ends up being “blocked” from receiving sunlight due to the Earth’s shadow. For this to happen, the Moon must be in its full phase.
In a total lunar eclipse, the Moon is completely covered by the Earth’s shadow, while in a partial eclipse only part of the satellite receives this shadow — which looks like a “bite” in the Moon.
On Tuesday night (17), the two phenomena occurred together.
Photographing the Supermoon Eclipse
Photographer Gabriel Zaparolli, who specializes in astrophotography, took a series of photos while the partial lunar eclipse was taking place.
“I used a Nikon D5100 with a 300mm lens to take the astrophotographs. In the first photo, I used the High Dynamic Range (HDR) technique, where I took a shot with less brightness, normal, and another more overexposed to show all the brightness bands of the partial lunar eclipse,” explained Zaparolli. “The second photo shows a trail from the beginning to the peak of the partial eclipse.”
The captures were made by Zaparolli from the city of Torres, in Rio Grande do Sul.

The remaining Supermoons of 2024 will occur in October 17th and November 15th.
However, the biggest and brightest Moon of the year will be in October, when the satellite should be about 100 kilometers closer to Earth.
