The TV and Radio Big Tigger presenter recalls a moment he had had for years with Sean “Diddy” Combs.
The DJ had met with Combs at the musician restaurant, Justin’s, and a photographer captured a moment of the two men talking about life.
“I still had the picture and I gave it to my grandmother before she died. It was a really great picture, as if I and I had a family conversation,” Big Tigger recalled the CNN . “He already had some of his children and I told him that he didn’t have any yet, and he was just talking about family and how important the family was to him. And I never forgot that personal conversation.”
Combs is no longer in a position to offer such wisdom easily.
His federal judgment for sex trafficking in Manhattan is entering his third week. Combs has declared innocent of accusations that include conspiracy for extortion, sexual trafficking and transportation for prostitution.
Cassie Ventura, an artist and ex-girlfriend of Combs, whom he also produced, spent more than 15 hours in court this week, detailing disturbing allegations of abuse she said she suffered in the hands of Combs.
Dawn Richards, another artist who worked with Combs both as a solo singer and a member of the female group Danity Kane, which Combs founded at her MTV reality show “Making The Band”, should testify next week.
Ventura made a civil agreement with Combs in 2023. He admitted no irregularity.
Richards filed a lawsuit in September 2024, accusing combing of sexual assault, sexual harassment and private jail. He denied the allegations.
It is not the trajectory that many expected for the Bad Boy Records founder, whose music and artists dominated the waves of radio in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Big Tigger compared him to Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown Records, for a younger generation.
“I kind of grew a little with puff through music, and when I finally entered the business, he was already the puff,” said Big Tigger, referring to one of the many Combs nicknames. “Puff, from the point of view of business and possibilities, was an inspiration.”
Combs influence extended beyond the music industry, as it also had several businesses that included fashion, hospitality and distilled drinks.
But music – from being an intern at Uptown Records to founding his own seal – that’s what opened the doors for these other industries for Combs. Many of the artists he helped present to the world so far have remained silent about their legal problems.
See what some of them said – or did not say – since Combs was accused of breaking the law.
Mase
The rapper was a frequent Comb employees and signed a contract with his label.
And while they were successful in songs like “Can” T Nobody Hold Me Down ”1997 and the hit of late Christopher Wallace, also known as The Notorious Big,“ Mo Money Moiso ”in the same year, Mase and Combs fell out after he accused Combs of exploring him and other Bad Boy artists, what Combs did he denied.
Mase recently attended the funeral of Wallace’s mother, Vonetta Wallace, that Comb adult son Christian Combs also attended.
Mase told Billboard that she would be open to reconnect with her former mentor.
“I mean, if my name was on the list, I would visit puff,” he said. “I would visit him, to make sure he was fine.”
He expressed his gratitude to Combs for helping to launch his career, adding that he has no idea if Combs is innocent or not.
“He didn’t do everything bad, he did some good things. I’m not talking about the tape story and all this, I’m talking about the musical side,” Mase said, referring to a 2016 video showing combs physically assaulting his then girlfriend Ventura. “Give me an opportunity, I think as a class person you definitely have to appear and sit somewhere in court if they leave it.”
Mary J. Blige
Blige was hired by Uptown Records, where Combs acted as a producer on her debut album “What” S the 411? “
The pair established a lasting friendship, working together in music and supporting each other’s projects.
Combs often referred to the singer as her “sister.” She returned kinship in September 2023 when she presented Combs with the Global Icon Award on MTV Video Music Awards.
“Congratulations to my brother @diddy #globalicanaward #vma,” wrote Blige in the caption of a series of photos celebrating the event.
She did not publicly comment on the charges against Combs.
Shyne
Moses “Shyne” Barrow was a rising artist in 1999 when she was hired by Bad Boy Records of Combs.
He was part of the producer’s entourage in a New York nightclub, along with then -Comb girlfriend Jennifer Lopez, when the night ended in a shooting. Three people were injured.
Barrow, Combs, and security guard Anthony Jones were tried by the shooting in 2001. Combs and Jones were acquitted, while Barrow was convicted of aggression and illegal possession of firearms. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and deported to his home country, Belize, after his release in 2009.
Barrow said to CNN In an interview last year that blames in part for the events that derailed their life and career.
“You know, there are so many things I’ve said so long about Diddy. No one heard, no one believed,” Barrow said. “And that makes the wounds that I, by the grace of God, managed to heal and the achievements that I have achieved even more significant.”
The event is a crucial part of the Hulu documentary about his life entitled “The Honorable Shyne.” Barrow said he and Combs reconnect 20 years later, but makes it clear that he did not witness the events that resulted in the current allegations against Combs.
“I didn’t have the opportunity to get involved with him to see any of these things and when I didn’t get involved with him, I didn’t see any of that,” Barrow said.
Lil Kim
The rapper was fundamental in Bad Boy’s initial success.
As a member of the Junior Group Mafia, along with his former loving hermisse Wallace, Combs was a featured artist on his single “Na Time”, a success of his 1996 debut album, “Hard Core”.
She returned the favor in her 1997 hit, “All About the Benjamins.”
That same year, they appeared together at The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show, where she explained that they initially met through Wallace, who was the best friend of Combs and one of the biggest stars of her record label.
“It’s funny because when I met [Combs] For the first time, I thought he didn’t like me because he showed my tongue or scowled, ”she said at the time.“ But as the years went by, I saw how much love he had for me, so I love you puff and I’m so happy for you. ”
She also showed off the diamond earrings that Combs gave her as a gift.
Lil Kim did not publicly comment on the charges against Combs.
Usher
After hearing for the producer and owner of the label La Reid Raymond, Usher was sent at age 15 to learn with Combs at “Puffy Flavor Camp”.
The now adult music star and actor talked to Howard Stern about it in 2016.
He said it was an intense experience to be a teenager in the 1990s in the bad boy universe, surrounded by so many famous artists, not to mention women.
“They weren’t there because of me,” Raymond said. “Howard, they were not my girls. But I recognized that, yes, one day could be my lifestyle.”
He did not speak publicly about the allegations.
Faith Evans
Evans was not just an award -winning Bad Boy singer, she was also married to Wallace, who was shot and killed in Los Angeles on March 9, 1997.
Known as “the first lady of Bad Boy Records, she and Combs worked together often. His single “I” ll be missing you ”honored Wallace after his death.
She spoke to Billboard about Combs on the red rug of the pre-grammy gala of Clive Davis in 2020.
“Puff has always been, long before bad boy see the real success in commercial sales and things like that, he was always a visionary,” she said. “He still knew what would make a record a success, he knew good talents, and he really had ideas for all of us … He told me,” You’re going to be it, “and” I’m going to turn it into it “… and it happened.”
Evans did not comment on the charges against Combs.
Big Tigger said he understands why some of those who were part of the intimate circle of Combs may not feel comfortable talking about him today.
“Whenever you say something about sexual aggression or anything in this line, no one wants to be associated with it,” he said. “Our society is very fast to group people. If I just say I was there [nas festas do Diddy]… Suddenly, people will think that I was probably involved and I’m covering him up and that and that. I don’t think people are running to get involved in that. ”
