What the US said:

Israel notified the Trump administration before the attacks on Gaza, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Monday (17).

“Since President Trump made clear, Hamas, the Houthis, all who seek to terrorize not only Israel, but also the United States of America, will be priced to pay,” Leavitt told Fox News, adding that Trump would defend “our friend and ally Israel.”

How did we get here?

The ceasefire should have three phases. The first started in January and expired on March 1 – but Hamas and Israel could not agree on how to move to the second stage.

Hamas wanted to enter phase two – which would have seen the Israeli troops completely withdraw Gaza and the release of all live hostages held by the group.

Instead, Israel pressed for an extension of phase one without committing to end the war or removing the troops.
