The royal family will attend a private burial ceremony for Queen Elizabeth II later this Monday (19). The monarch will be buried in the King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor Castle.
In the last public stage of the funeral, with the presence of guests, the queen’s coffin was lowered to the Royal Vault, situated below the Chapel of São Jorge.
Even though it is the place where many royals are buried, such as King George III, IV and V, William IV and others, this will not be Elizabeth II’s final destination.
Later this Monday, the queen will be buried in the King George VI Memorial Chapel, located elsewhere within São Jorge. In the same place where the queen will rest, her parents are buried, in addition to the coffin that holds the ashes of her sister, Princess Margaret.
Her husband Prince Philip, who died last year, had been temporarily buried in St George’s Chapel, but will be moved to the memorial chapel with his wife.
Although it is closed for Monday’s private ceremony, the shrine is normally open to the public and can be visited by those wishing to pay their respects.
