See which films will be continued in 2024

This year, several films get their long-awaited sequels. From animation to action, many characters that are already beloved by viewers return to the surface. Furthermore, other protagonists will also be introduced in the sequels.

In “Joker: Madness for Two”, Joaquin Phoenix returns with the character that won him the Oscar in 2019, this time accompanied by Lady Gaga, who will be the new interpreter of Harley Quinn in cinemas. Another sequel hitting the big screen next month is “Dune: Part 2”, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya.

Animations such as “Inside Out 2” and “Kung Fu Panda 4” are also expected this year. A CNN prepared a list of nine film sequels that hit theaters this year, check it out:

“Dune: Part 2” – February 29

After the postponement of its release due to the strikes that took place in Hollywood, the long-awaited sequel to “Dune” hits theaters next month. The film is the second chapter of Denis Villenueve's adaptation of the literary work of the same name. On the big screen, the plot stars Timothée Chalamet, who plays the young Paul Atreides, heir to the desert planet Arrakis.

According to the director, the first film is “more contemplative” while Part Two “is an epic, action-packed war film.” Furthermore, Zendaya stated during her participation in CCXP 2023, in São Paulo, that she will have more screen time in the new film.

“Kung Fu Panda 4” – March 8

After eight years, the new film in the franchise starring the panda Po arrives in theaters. According to the official synopsis of the new film, the plot will follow Po on his journey to become the Spiritual Leader, needing to choose a new Dragon Warrior. However, a new threat, represented by a villain called Camaleoa, appears along the way, which could bring back enemies that Po had in the past.

The animation is a continuation of three other films in the franchise produced by DreamWorks Animation, released in 2008, 2011 and 2016.

“Inside Out 2” – June

Pixar's beloved sequel in partnership with Disney brings new things to the life of protagonist Riley, who is now in the prime of adolescence, aged 13. In addition to dealing with the voices in her head that are also present in the first film, the girl will also have an unexpected visit from Anxiety, which arrives accentuating new emotions such as envy, boredom and shame.

The first film, released in 2015, won the best animated film category at the 2016 Oscars and Golden Globes.

“Deadpool 3” – July

The third film featuring the DC Comics antihero also hits theaters this year. It is worth mentioning that this will be the first film in the franchise within the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), after Disney purchased Century Fox.

In addition to Ryan Reynolds, who returns in the main role, Hugh Jackman returns to play the hero Wolverine. Names like Karan Soni, Leslie Uggams, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Emma Corrin and Jennifer Garner also make up the cast.

“Beetlejuice 2” – September 6

The classic 1988 film directed by Tim Burton and called “The Ghosts Have Fun” in Brazil, gets a sequel in September this year. Part of the original cast is confirmed for the new film, such as Michael Keaton (Beetlejuice) and Winona Ryder (Lydia Deetz). Jenna Ortega, known for her success in the role of Wandinha, in the Netflix series, was included in the sequence.

Filming for the film ended in November 2023.

“Joker: Madness for Two” – October

After the great success of the 2019 film, Joaquin Phoenix brings the Joker to life once again in the film's sequel. This time, Lady Gaga will be the new interpreter of Harley Quinn in theaters.

Other names such as Brendan Gleeson, Zazie Beetz and Catherine Keener make up the cast. Last month, director Todd Philips shared two photos of the highly anticipated sequel on his social media.

“Venom 3” – November 8

Still without many details about the sequel, the antihero's next film is intended to be the third in the franchise sequence, which launched “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” in 2021.

In November last year, the film's protagonist, Tom Hardy, celebrated the return of filming on “Venom 3”, and wrote an extensive tribute to the production team in a post on your Instagram.

“Gladiator 2” – November 22

Paul Mescal will be the new protagonist of the sequel to the film released in 2000 and starring Russell Crowe. The Irishman will play Lucius, nephew of Commodus, a character played by Joaquin Phoenix.

The plot will have a time jump compared to the first film. Lucius, son of Commodous and Lucilla, who was inspired by the Gladiator, is now Emperor.

In addition to Mescal, names like Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal and Barry Keoghan make up the cast.

“Sonic 3” – December 20

The third film in the sequence hits theaters in 2024 and promises something new. The character Shadow appeared in the post-credits scenes of “Sonic 2” and has already been confirmed in the new film through a publication on X, the former Twitter. In the image you can see a part of his body next to a clapperboard.
