A survey carried out exclusively for the CNN by Jato Dynamics pointed out the ten cheapest SUVs in Brazil, in the first half of 2022. Prices ranged from R$97,000 to R$110,000, ten times less than the most expensive types in the country.
Among the highlights were two models of the Fiat Pulse, Nissan Kicks, Renault Duster and JAC T40. In addition to the Chery Tiggo 3x (which is no longer in production in the country) and the Chevrolet Tracker.
Fenabrave (National Federation of Automotive Vehicle Distribution) registered the license plate of 40 models of SUVs in July 2022. In all, there were 53 thousand units, 11.26% less than the previous month. In all, there were 371 thousand vehicles in 2022.
According to Milad Kalume, Business Development Manager at Jato Dynamics, these vehicles are cheaper because they are known as entry-level cars. That is, among the brand’s models, these are the most basic SUVs, thinking about technical optimizations.
The Fiat Pulse 1.3 drive, which took first place in the list of lowest prices, would rise to approximately R$ 700 thousand, if the driver included in the vehicle electric seats, leather seat, panel with electronic display, seat with adjustment memory, electric steering wheel, sunroof and panoramic roof, said the expert.
“And at that price, if the customer invests a little more, he can buy a Porsche, BMW or Land Rover. […] thus, Fiat would lose market”. Thus, Pulse has less equipment and ends up dropping its price.
The strategy of finding the right price with the right technicalities is called product positioning. “[As montadoras] they think about what they can have in a vehicle to be able to sell and not lose customers, while at the same time not getting expensive to produce, which could increase the value of the car”.
The analyst also stated that SUVs have been considered the ‘pot of gold’ in the market for the last ten years. Well, these types of vehicles began to be launched more and more with attractive designs, in addition to being equipped with the newest technology of the moment.
