Seeking to expand opposition to Trump, young people ask for space in the Democratic Party

Donald Trump’s government completes 100 days with the Republican losing popularity and the first demonstrations against his government arising around the United States. The Democratic Party is one of the protest organizers, who tries to meet after the defeat in the 2024 elections.

Trump’s return to the White House was a tough blow to the party, especially from the bad results on hitherto consolidated party, such as young people and low -income people.

“Democrats were flanked, surpassed and overdue,” said the senior commentator of politics of CNN Van Jones.

Perception is the same within the party, with different wings trying to secure more space in the midst of reconstruction. These include the so -called “young Democrats”, who realized the difficulty of Kamala Harris’s campaign to engage people between 18 and 29 years old and ask for changes in the approach with this audience.

Wisconsin’s young democrats leader Jake Williams argues that defeat in the 2024 elections had a great culprit: communication.

“We saw Republicans tell us what our values were and our platforms, not us,” he says.

Taking the younger ones, Republicans were actively towards the streaming platform, podcasts and Tiktok. Trump, by the way, prevented the blockade of the Chinese platform in the United States and stated that he “has affection for Tiktok” and that it is a “honor” to be on the social network.

Proximity has had an effect. Voters between 18 and 29 years old, who voted mostly in the Democrats in the last 3 decades, have approached the Republicans. Still, Kamala Harris managed to win this electorate extract, but for only 4 percentage points. Joe Biden, in the 2020 election, had a 5 times better result, with an advantage of 25 percentage points.

“Democrats certainly have big names, but we don’t have the same media environment that is being used to build the next generation of leaders,” says Williams, who shows concern about party direction.

The same impression is seen on the other side of the country in New York. Stephanie Campaign-Wheaton, daughter of Brazilian immigrants in the United States and representative of the young Democrats of America, reinforces the speech and adds that “he does not see original ideas in the party.”

It attributes part of the lack of new content in the small space for young people in the Democratic Committees. “Youth always sees the same people as the party. We need people who understand Tiktok and understand our situation.”

Outside the Democratic group, the perspective is also bad. Research conducted by CNN During the 2024 elections showed that 72% of voters under 35 said Joe Biden’s government did not help them sufficiently. The criticism came in the wake of the escalation of inflation and the increase in the cost of living, especially in the housing.

PICTORAM VISIZATION

Williams and Stephanie say that much of Democrats’ reconstruction is linked to the resumption of the connection between politicians, the working class and the young. Both identify that the party has distanced itself from the base, including barriers to meetings and meetings between co -religionists. “How can we say that our party is workers if our meeting is midweek?”, Points out the Brazilian.

The representative of the young Democrats of America criticizes the party’s older leadership who, according to her, lost their connection to the base, not knowing how to convey messages and “out of reality.”

“They are keeping people younger, basically as messengers, but they are not really supporting us.” Stephanie complains.

The solution found by youth is to eat by the edges.

Earlier this year, Democrats held elections for the acronym’s executive leadership, known as the National Democratic Committee (DNC). The winner was Ken Martin, a longtime supporter and former participant in youth movements, such as those of Stephanie and Jake Williams.

Martin then opened the committee’s doors for group complaints, but also asked for more involvement – especially with calls and face -to -face conversations with non -affiliated people.

The attempt is to set up a stronger opposition against Donald Trump, starting from below. The party sees the fall of popularity of the Republican as a way of calling the public to its agenda. According to the Democratic Youth leader in Wisconsin, the group cannot only be an opponent, but also represent a viable alternative against trump.

Williams points out that he fears creating a wave of resentment against Trump and the Republicans. “We need to represent something and clearly say that” not only vote for us because we are not Trump, but because we want to bring you appropriate payments, build houses, create opportunity. “

The president of the young Democrats of America, Quentin Ocama, points out that the moment is to build the speech. “We need to show what we’re fighting. Now it’s time to fight for our values and show courage to it.”

The work seems to be working, at least momentarily. Investing in social networks, university movements and knocking on “door to door”, the Democrats secured the victory of the progressive judge Susan Crawford in the election for the Supreme Court of Wisconsin.

“We did a good job. We did the Wisconsin People’s Rights Campaign,” says Williams. The movement seen during the election was to pass inside local communities, understanding the demands and requests of the populations.

Changes in DNC and Wisconsin victory have strengthened youth within the party, but it still needs more to consolidate.

“Younger voices are becoming stronger,” said Stephanie and Williams. “But I hope to see how much we can be even more included,” ponders the American daughter of Brazilians.
