Selena Gomez Brings ‘Childless Cat Ladies’ to the 2024 Emmys (And She’s in Good Company)

JD Vance’s ‘kidless cat ladies’ line was a reliable joke at the 2024 Emmys Selena Gomez, Candice Bergen and of course the cast of The West Wing they were semi-political on TV’s biggest night.

With just 50 days to go until the next presidential election, politics has been the focus of attention for many stars at the Emmy 2024, where the vote was the subject of numerous speeches and J.D. Vance was often the subject of jokes. The first reference to the 2024 presidential election came at the beginning of the evening. During the award ceremony of the evening’s first prize, Selena Gomez he defined his colleagues as Only Murders Steve Martin And Martin Short as in “childless cat lady,” in reference to Vance’s now-infamous quip.

Two of the night’s first honorees also made political remarks during their acceptance speeches. Billy Crudup Of The Morning Show , who won his second Emmy for supporting actor in a drama series, recognized his wife and fellow nominee Naomi Watts (Feud: Capote vs. the Swans) as “an immigrant” who “also starts businesses”. Then Liza Colon-Zayas Of The Bear, who won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for the first time, concluded her speech by addressing “the Latinas who look up to me [per] keep believing and voting – vote for your rights.”

Before presenting the Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series to Jean Smart Of Hacks , Candice Bergen has reflected on the criticisms of the then Vice President Dan Quayle to his iconic sitcom Murphy Brown. «For 11 years I had the enormous privilege of playing the lead in a comedy series called Murphy Brown. I was surrounded by brilliant, funny actors. I had the best scripts to work with. And in a classic moment, my character was attacked by Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy got pregnant and decided to raise the baby as a single mother,” Bergen began.

“Today, a Republican vice presidential candidate would never attack a woman for having a baby. My work here is done.”said Bergen, adding a ‘meow’ for good measure, while an amused Jon Stewart laughed from the audience. In honor of the show’s 25th anniversary, cast members of The West Wing, including Martin Sheen, Allison Janney, Dulé Hill, Richard Schiff And Janel Moloney, yes I am gathered to present the award for best drama series to Shogun at the 2024 Emmys. Before reading the winner, they appropriately joked about how modern political storylines would be deemed too outlandish for their series and implored viewers to make sure they were registered to vote.
