Semiconductor sales up 10.8% in 2020, according to IDC

Despite the impact of COVID-19 on the global economy, the semiconductor market showed strong performance in 2020. However, demand has been uneven throughout the year due to global constraints, telecommuting and education, and changes in consumer buying behavior.

According to experts from the analytical company IDC, global revenue from the production of semiconductor products in 2020 increased by 10.8% compared to 2019 and reached $ 464 billion. IDC experts predict that in 2021 the semiconductor market will reach $ 522 billion, that is, it will grow by 12.5% compared to last year. IDC expects continued robust growth in semiconductor manufacturing for consumer electronics, computing, 5G equipment and the automotive industry.

Sales of components for PCs and servers outpaced the overall semiconductor market in terms of growth, which in this segment was 17.3%. In absolute terms, the semiconductor computing segment is valued at $ 160 billion.

Notably, sales of semiconductor products for smartphones rose 9.1%, while sales of smartphones themselves declined by more than 10%. Analysts attribute this to the transition to more expensive chips with 5G support, an increase in memory and the number of sensors per smartphone. IDC predicts that revenue from the sale of semiconductor products for smartphones in 2021 will grow by 23.3% to reach $ 147 billion.
