Senate Committee defends government presence and security to the Task Force in Vale do Javari

The Senate Committee that investigates the causes of the increase in crime and attacks in the North region, following the murders of indigenist Bruno Pereira and journalist Dom Phillips, approved this Wednesday (6th) a preliminary report on the measures that can be adopted to meet demands in the region.

The ad hoc rapporteur, appointed due to the on-site mission in Vale do Javari, Tabatinga and Atalaia do Norte, Senator Fabiano Contarato (PT-ES), stated in the report that “there is a fragile understanding between the authorities involved in the investigation about the competence state or federal”. This makes it difficult to investigate crimes and monitor borders.

“(…) Which can result in delays and loss of opportunities, or even prescription of crimes, as in other cases. Furthermore, the lack of effective security puts at risk everyone who, in one way or another, goes against the interests of powerful criminals operating in the region,” Contarato said in the text.

For the senator, who had the support of the commission, it is urgent that security be guaranteed for the task force and that the investigative competence be clearly defined, including in the case of the murder of Funai server Maxciel, in 2019 .

The report also addressed the need for greater State attention to indigenous people, who end up risking their lives and defending land on their own, which end up in small “wars” with organized crime and illegal mining.

“They ask, at all times, that Brazilian sovereignty be exercised in fact, that laws be complied with, that people have their rights guaranteed and that indigenous peoples can live in peace on their lands,” he added.

Finally, the commission also calls for sustainable development projects and public policies that allow indigenous and non-indigenous people to live with dignity, in peace and harmony, without having to act due to the absence of public bodies.
