On Thursday morning (25), the plenary of the Federal Senate held a special session to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Rádio Itatiaia from Minas Gerais.
“Since the beginning of the 1950s, Rádio Itatiaia has become a milestone in the history of radio in Minas Gerais,” said the president of the House, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD), who is a senator for the state of Minas.
“In every year of 2022 we will celebrate, with justice, the 70 years of Rádio Itatiaia and the certainty that more decades will come covering it with new achievements”, completed Pacheco at the conclusion of the opening of the session.
The session arose from a request made by the president of the Senate and also signed by senators Carlos Viana (PL), Alexandre Silveira (PSD), Nelsinho Trad (PSD), Marcos Rogério (PL), Jayme Campos (União Brasil) and Sérgio Petecão ( PSD).
Considered the main radio station in Minas Gerais, Itatiaia was founded in the 1950s and stood out for its sports and political coverage in the state.
In May 2021, Itatiaia became controlled by the Rubens Menin business group, chairman of the Board of Directors and owner of CNN Brazil, who was also present at the Senate session and was honored during Pacheco’s speech.
Session request approved in February
“Founded on January 20, 1952, in Belo Horizonte, by the late journalist and broadcaster Januário Laurindo Carneiro, Rádio Itatiaia is today the main broadcaster in the State of Minas Gerais – and one of the five most listened to in the country,” Pacheco wrote in the application. of the session.
The request also highlights Itatiaia as a “precursor of coverage of international events for the population of Minas Gerais”, with the examples of the World Cups and Olympics held since 1966.
Pacheco also justified the session’s request with the fact that Radio was the first to use satellite for international and live transmissions via the internet.
Filed on February 22, the request was approved by the plenary in a symbolic vote at the session on the 23rd of the same month.
In the February session, Pacheco stated that he was happy to be the author of this request and called Rádio Itatiaia “a reason for pride for all of us from Minas Gerais”.
