Senate invites Petrobras president to explain profit distribution

The Senate Committee on Economic Affairs (CAE) decided this Tuesday to invite the president of Petrobras, Joaquim Silva e Luna, to explain how the distribution of R$ 101 billion of the state-owned company’s 2021 profits to shareholders was made.

Author of the request to hear him, Senator Jean Paul Prates (PT/RN), states that the value “much” exceeds the company’s legal obligation to distribute 25% of the calculated profit and raises criticism from the population that has been paying dearly for fuel. . “We have seen successive increases in fuel costs in the country, which contrast with the abundance in shared dividends”, said the senator.

There is still no date for a session with Silva and Luna. Also invited will be the chief financial and investor relations director, Rodrigo Araujo Alves, and Rodolfo Landim, current president of Flamengo, who was recently appointed to chair the Petrobras Board of Directors and the counselor representing Petrobras workers, Rosangela Buzanelli Torres. .

Pressure on Petrobras is also coming from the government for the company to reduce its profits. President Jair Bolsonaro wants to change Petrobras’ pricing policy. “In a moment of crisis like this, I think that this profit there, depending on the decision of the directors, the board, the president, and in this moment of crisis here, it can be lowered here a little so we don’t suffer too much here. Otherwise, there will be huge inflation here”, said the president in an internet broadcast last week.

Petrobras recorded a profit of BRL 106 billion in 2021, an increase of 1,400% compared to BRL 7.11 billion in 2020.

This Wednesday (9), the Senate Plenary will vote on projects to reduce the volatility of fuel prices, one of which changes the ICMS collection rules and establishes the single collection of the tax in the state of origin. The other provides for the creation of a Price Stabilization Account (CEP Fuels), to control prices at high moments.

Sought by CNN, Petrobras has not yet commented on the invitation.
