In a ceremony held on the afternoon of this Tuesday (15), the Federal Senate inaugurated a memorial in honor of the victims of Covid-19 in Brazil.
The work is composed of 27 internally lit prisms, representing each of the federation units. The marble pieces were installed in the entrance hall of the Petrônio Portella auditorium.
The ceremony began with the national anthem, followed by a minute of silence in honor of the more than 600,000 people who died as a result of the disease in the country.
Senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), who acted as rapporteur for the CPI on the Pandemic, along with other commission participants, were responsible for proposing the installation of the memorial, approved in October last year.
The President of the House, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) and former members of the Pandemic CPI, such as Senators Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP), Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), Rogério Carvalho (PT-SE) also participated in the ceremony. ), Humberto Costa (PT-PE) and Alessandro Vieira (Citizenship-SE); in addition to Senators Soraya Thronicke (PSL-MS) and Simone Tebet (MDB-MS).
The counselor of the Amnesty Commission at the Ministry of Justice, Sueli Aparecida Bellato, began the speeches, thanking her for the symbolic gesture of the project.
Then Randolfe recalled that the memorial inaugurated by the Senate is the first in the country and stated that “we live in sad times in our history”.
“It’s a memorial to never happening again, but it’s not enough. Putting an end to the CPI report and, above all, not giving space to fascist denialism, the propagator of death, is a civilizing duty of the times we live in”, concluded Randolfe.
The representative of the victims of Covid-19, José Mauro Queijada, was the third to pay tribute to the victims of the pandemic and thanked them for the memorial project.
In his speech, Renan Calheiros criticized Brazil’s performance during the pandemic. In his assessment, it was “one of the worst performances in the world in the fight against Covid-19”.
Rodrigo Pacheco sympathized with the dead and family members victimized by Covid and paid tribute to professionals on the front line of the pandemic.
“Many thanks to all health professionals in Brazil. You are true unsung heroes, who treated millions of Brazilians with courage and willingness”, thanked Pacheco.
