Senators approve 30 recommendations against delay in education due to pandemic

The Temporary Subcommittee for Monitoring Education in the Pandemic approved this Monday (5) its final report, which presents 30 recommendations for public bodies to recover losses in the sector caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

One of the suggestions is that the Ministries of Education and Economy recompose the basic education budget. Another recommendation is to support programs to improve infrastructure and connectivity in schools across the country.

In practice, the report with the recommendations will be forwarded to the Senate Education Committee on Thursday (8). The congressmen supported the approval of several proposals, among them the one that creates the National Education System (SNE).

In addition to supporting legislative proposals, several recommendations were also made to the ministries, such as the one dealing with the recomposition of the basic education budget.

The president of the subcommittee, senator Flávio Arns (Podemos-PR), explained that the works were divided into six axes: access to education, permanence in school, recomposition of learning, connectivity, school infrastructure and education budget.

20 public hearings have been held since September 2021, when the subcommittee was created, with the aim of diagnosing the impacts of the pandemic on the education sector.

The report indicates difficulties faced by education professionals with remote work during the height of the pandemic. Among the consequences are professional demotivation, emotional problems of the teams, lack of equipment, lack of infrastructure and lack of adequate internet connection, exclusion and school dropout.

Issues involving school lunches and food security were also highlighted in the subcommittee’s final report. Because of this, recommendations were made on health protocols for resuming face-to-face activities and on focusing on mental health care for students and education professionals.

In this sense, the senators who are part of the subcommittee suggest, among other measures, a more robust budget investment in the educational area to face these problems, as well as the agreement of actions in a coordinated way between the entities of the federation.
