Any agreement between the United States and Iran should include an agreement so as not to enrich uranium, said US special Steve Witkoff on Sunday – a comment that attracted Tehran criticism.
While Witkoff reiterated President Donald Trump’s position on uranium enrichment, Iran’s response showed that both sides have a long way to go to reach an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program.
“We have a very, very clear red line, which is enrichment. We can’t even allow 1% of enrichment capacity,” Witkoff said during an interview on ABC’s “This Week” program.
It all starts from the Trump government point of view, “with an agreement that does not include enrichment. We can’t have it. Because enrichment allows weapons. And we won’t allow a bomb to arrive here,” said Witkoff.
Tehran’s answer was quick.
“Irerealist expectations prevent negotiations, enrichment in Iran is not something that can be interrupted,” said Iranian Foreign Minister Araqchi Abbas on Sunday, according to Semioficial News Agency Tasnim.
“I think he’s completely distant from the reality of negotiations,” Araqchi said about Witkoff, adding that enrichment will continue.
Witkoff said he was optimistic about negotiations and believes the parties will again talk in Europe this week.
“We hope this will take a really positive mood,” said Witkoff.
Araqchi stated that the date and venue of the next round of negotiations will be announced soon.
Trump said on Thursday that the United States were very close to closing a nuclear deal with Iran, but on Friday (16) said Iran needs to act quickly. Trump told reporters on Friday aboard Air Force One after taking off from the United Arab Emirates: “They have a proposal. More importantly, they know they need to act quickly, or something bad-something bad-it will happen,” according to an audio recording of statements.
Araqchi stated on social networks that Tehran had not received a US proposal.
During his first term as president, Trump removed the United States from a 2015 agreement between Iran and world powers that imposed rigid boundaries on Uranio de Tehran enrichment activities in exchange for the relief of sanctions. Trump also reimples comprehensive US sanctions.
