Albania will seek the European Union to continue its bid for membership separately from its neighbor Northern Macedonia, which still faces a Bulgarian veto, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said on Thursday.
Northern Macedonia and Albania were due to start accession talks with the bloc in late 2020, but Bulgaria blocked the start of formal talks due to a history and language dispute with northern Macedonia.
The EU has grouped both countries in their bid for membership. Speaking in Tirana, Rama said he was not optimistic that Bulgaria would lift its veto soon.
“Albania can not wait any longer until two neighbors resolve their dispute,” Rama said, adding that Albania had good relations with both countries.
German Chancellor Olaf Solz said last week that talks on Albania and Northern Macedonia joining the EU should begin as soon as possible, as any delay would make the Western Balkans vulnerable to external influence.
