Separating from Huawei won’t help? The United States wants to impose sanctions against independent Honor

It seemed that the separation of Honor from Huawei would completely save the former from the sanctions imposed by the US administration on the latter. Indeed, after the separation from the parent company, Honor gained access to all the necessary hardware components, as well as Google services – the company is actively recapturing positions in the smartphone market that it had lost earlier. However, it may very well be that this “window of opportunity” will soon close: the US is calling to add the already independent Honor to the blacklist.

With such an initiative, as the source writes, 14 Republicans came forward. On Friday in the House of Representatives, they petitioned the US Department of Commerce to blacklist the former Huawei unit of the government.

Politicians led by Republican Michael McCaul, a member of the House Foreign Relations Committee, note in their letter that Honor has been expelled from Huawei Technologies, which was sanctioned in May 2019. But this was done so that Honor could “evade U.S. export control policies to keep U.S. technology and software from falling into the hands of the Chinese Communist Party».

A US Department of Commerce spokesman said the agency appreciates “the point of view of members of Congress“. He noted that the department “constantly examines available information to identify potential additions to the list of organizations».

The US administration believes that Huawei poses a threat to national security, although Huawei itself has repeatedly denied this. In January, Honor said it had partnered with Intel and Qualcomm, effectively bringing the company back into the laptop and smartphone segments. However, politicians believe that “concerns about exporting technology to Honor when it was part of Huawei must relate to its current state-backed ownership».
